Have you ever been annoyed at Windows for putting boxes under your icons after changing your background? Well, some amazing advances in technology give you the power to fix that.

If you Google it, you’ll find there are 2 common fixes that sometimes work:

1. Go to your desktop, right click, properties, Desktop tab, then click "Customize desktop" at the bottom. Go into web, and uncheck "Lock desktop items". Click okay, then see if it’s fixed.

2. Go into start, right click on "My computer," go into properties. Go to the advanced tab, and click "Performance". Make sure "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked.

If neither of those work, there’s one more thing you can try…

3. The format of the background image. Open your background up in paint, then File > Save As, and save as 24 bit bitmap. Now select the .bmp file for your background, and it should be smooth sailing!

When you see this, you think… Death? For example, if you’re working on something, and go eat dinner and this comes up… You’re hosed. Closes everything out, messes you up bad.

In fact, someone sued microsoft over this.

Now, how to kill it? I found an interesting article at LifeHacker on how to do this.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go into start, click Run
  2. Type in gpedit.msc, press enter
  3. Make sure you’re in Local Computer Policy (Left coloum, to the top)
  4. Choose Computer Configuration, in the window on the right
  5. Click on Administrative Templates
  6. Click on Windows Components
  7. Click on Windows Update
  8. Double click on Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations
  9. Choose "Disabled", and click ok.
